The garden grew out of a vision to be a place where not only good food was grown, but a place where people could grow--and more so, grow as a community made up of many different people. A space that at its core seeks to honor the land it rests on, the neighborhood that it calls home, the mouth it feeds and the wider food system it longs to affect. The garden itself became a manifestation of what drives Fresh Harvest as a company--community. Our garden made roots in the summer of 2015. It was a humble beginning made up of donated land and many helping hands. It was in that very moment that we became caretakers of a wild and precious thing. Like any planted seed or dream, it took and continues to take time. And so we began this quest to be learners, to be nurturers, to slow down, to take down walls and get some dirt under our nails. So what does it look like day-to-day? Smelly old veggie scraps turned into compost, chickens clucking and foraging under fruit trees, mushrooms spread under the tree canopy, people slowing down, cooking demos inspiring new chefs, pot luck dinners, movie nights cast on an old cabin and kids kayaking in the pond. It’s a place where these little steps move us one step closer in the revolution for creating a new food system. We press on with our dream of a diverse space made up of dreamers and doers, growers and eaters, learners and teachers alike--a place in which we can reconnect with our food source while rerooting ourselves in community and the land. We hope that you will join us as we continue in this journey to create, sustain and inspire community grounded in growing good food.
